Amazon Helps Cement HTML5’s Place in the Future of Publishing

Marine aviators are using ipads in the cockpit, as well as commercial aviation pilots. The Army has chosen Android as the operating system of their future mobile systems.

So why are we still providing technical information as PDF files or as interactive technical manuals viewed in government-provided viewers which function at the height of 90s technology?

I’d like to see an program executive office or an acquisition command specify technical information provided in HTML 5, like Amazon’s new ebook format. The government is always looking for cost savings by applying commercial, off-the-shelf solutions and industry standards to their system needs. Here is a great opportunity to do that, and such a change may also provide a cost savings to contractors who produce the technical information in that they would no longer need to use specialized tools or require specialized training to produce information for their customers. A rare win-win!
