Online Indexing for help systems

Hi,

I work as a technical writer and use RH9 to create CHM files which are integrated with our product so that help can be invoked from the various windows within the system.

Does anyone know of any good books that cover how indexing for help systems should work? Curently RH just creates a massive list of index terms (based on the terms in the Word document).

How about a more web 2.0 approach to your documentation? You can:

    1. Create CSH maps from your current project
    2. Use the AIR Help output format
    3. Rely on Search + CSH instead of tedious and sometimes ineffective indexing techniques

Note that you can also add images, simulations, and external resource links to the AIR module making the user help experience much more robust. I am working on the CSH aspect of this process now but I have already created AIR Help that my users like MUCH better then their prior dull chms. 😉
